I've put this forward as a request too. But, for my community I'd like to know the persons full name on sign up but then have the option to choose a username additionally... So from admin/behind the scenes, I can see who the real person is, but in the community they can have a username displayed if they wish.

This is definitely needed! Members should have the choice between providing their real name or a username. Many people prefer to have anonymity online, and the use of usernames is so widespread that it’s a basic feature that’s expected in chatrooms, forums and communities.

Love this idea, not everyone wants to use their name and are more comfortable using a username.
